Learning from Great Places
Searching out other artists
You’ll probably know what I’m going to say, and you’re correct, lets have a look at stuff you do like, it’s the most obvious thing and has real value.
The key to this one unfortunately is there is no quick fix and could take a lifetime to really decide what it is you like about some work and what you don’t, but as is said you have to start somewhere.
So get stuck in and hunt it down and really search. My biggest piece of advice is don’t get caught out by the ‘experts’ out there, if someone is shouting from the rooftops that they are an expert, it’s highly likely they will not be.
Don’t be fooled by flashy Instagram posts, often taken with cellphones and hammered with filters, etc, be discerning, and give it time. (not saying it’s all like that on Instagram- there is some stunning work – way better than mine)
I’ve been involved in the Photography business since the early 90s and I’m still learning what I like, who I like, and why.
01
Henry Cartier-Bresson
Born in Chanteloup-en-Brie, Seine-et-Marne, Henri Cartier-Bresson developed a strong fascination with painting early on, and particularly with Surrealism. In 1932, after spending a year in the Ivory Coast, he discovered the Leica – his camera of choice after that moment – and began a life-long passion for photography. In 1933, he had his first exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York.

Elliot Erwitt
Born in Paris in 1928 to Russian parents, Erwitt spent his childhood in Milan, then emigrated to the US, via France, with his family in 1939. As a teenager living in Hollywood, he developed an interest in photography and worked in a commercial darkroom before experimenting with photography at Los Angeles City College.
